Broxbourne Vets v Veterans, 05 Sep 2021 (League)
Buntingford Lost 2-1
The Vets visited Broxbourne for the 1st league game of the season on a very warm morning; a tough game was expected against the current league champions.
The 1st half began as expected with Broxbourne on the front foot, but apart from a few wayward free kicks and a good save from Ronnie Dixon in goal, Bunt defended well as a team and looked dangerous on the break.
It was a quick break as Ronnie the cat threw to Glen Doughty and his pass put Nathan Searle away down the left and he confidently fired the ball into the far corner, 1-0 at half-time.
The second half started in the same manner but then a penalty was awarded to Broxbourne for an innocuous looking handball, but the resulting kick was blasted high and wide.
Bunt then had a chance to go 2 up when Ricky Emery burst down the right wing and unluckily fired against the crossbar.
Now Nathan had to go off injured and Bunt lost their talismanic striker, which definitely didn’t help the outcome of the match.
Broxbourne continued to push and probe and eventually the ball ricocheted around the edge of the box and fell to a Broxbourne player who calmly finished to level the scores.
Chris Saynor quickly broke away down the right and into the box but his shot just missed the far corner for a Bunt second.
Another penalty was awarded to Broxbourne just after this for a dubious push in the box, but again the resulting penalty was missed.
Town were now feeling the pressure of all their hard work and the tired legs started to see the game opening up.
A bouncing ball in the middle of the park resulted in a through ball and for the 1st time in the match Broxbourne got behind the Bunt back line and the forward ran through to score.
There was still time for Bunt to push for an equaliser and an opportunity fell to Steve Dare just inside the box, but his shot just passed the far post, so 2-1 Broxbourne.
This was a hard game for the Vets against a very good Broxbourne team and they deserved a draw for their performance, but if they can perform like this every week the it bodes well for a good season.
