Finally - League Victories!
9th Nov 2009
It's been a long wait but finally, on Saturday, Town's First and Reserve teams recorded their first league wins of the season.
The First Team ran out as 4-0 winners at Walkern; leading goalscorer Max Camp scored within the first 2 minutes of the match but had to retire through injury shortly after.
With the score still 1-0 at half time it was a nerve-racking experience for managers Barry Tokely and Darren Fitzgerald, but Town won through eventually with goals from Kev Scales, Les Chappell and Rino Bussola completing the scoring.
Not only was it our first league win, but also our first clean sheet!
The Reserves had it all to prove following their 9-2 drubbing the week before, but the result at home to Mill End Sports was never really in doubt with Town's fluid passing game too much for the visitors to cope with.
Buntingford went into an early lead with a fortunate penalty decision; Mill End equalised soon after, but rather than fold under pressure as they so often have this season, the Reserves dug in and went into the half-time break 5-1 up, much to the relief of manager Laurence Salmon.
Mill End put up a good showing in the first 15 minutes of the second period, but eventually conceded a further 5 goals, with Louis Gilbert bagging 6 for Town in the 10-1 victory.
These two results are well deserved; this season's results have not reflected just how well each side has been playing and now the effort and commitment from managers and players alike is beginning to pay off.
Keep up the good work!
The Vets unfortunately were unable to capitalise on the weekend's feel good factor, although in the end it took a penalty shoot-out for Harpenden Rovers to see them off in Round 2 of the Herts FA Veteran's Cup.
No doubt the Vets will be back again next year in this competition, and with their younger members fast approaching that magic age of 40 will no doubt be stronger than ever!
