Ladies v Sherrardswood Ladies, 19 Sep 2021 (League)
Buntingford Won 4-3
Georgia Gannaway scored Town's first
After a great start to the season last weekend, The Ladies welcomed Sherradswood Ladies to The Bury on Saturday and, with Managers Kate and Robyn McFayden otherwise engaged on ‘family business’, it was left to The Chairman and Bobby White (Reserve Team Manager) to plot the downfall of the opposition - aided by Kate and Robyn’s notes which, upon examination, simply said “do what you think is right”.
Last season’s fixtures against Sherrardswood were extremely competitive (in the right way) with both games were settled in the home team’s favour by a single goal and it was clear, right from the start, that this game was going to be a humdinger!
Things did not start well as Bunt seemingly forgot the instruction ‘keep things tight for the first ten minutes’, gifting the opposition possession deep in our half and conceding the opening goal with barely three minutes on the referee’s watch.
In previous seasons such a setback would have signalled the opening of the floodgates, however, this season’s squad are made of stronger stuff and, barely five minutes later, a Georgia screamer bulged the back of the Sharrardswood net - all square!
The game then became more cagey with both sides enjoying periods of possession before Sharrardswood once again took advantage of a defensive mix up to nose ahead.
Danielle Aken put Town in front
Back came Bunt again, dominating the last 20 minutes of the first half but struggling to make headway until Isobel Cotton found herself released down the right hand wing before driving into the penalty box and shooting from a tight angle into the far side of the netting!
2-2 at the break.
Buntingford started the second half on the front foot and 3 minutes into the second period took the lead for the first time when Dan Aken’s stooped header at the back post from a corner found its way into the back of the net.
Unsurprisingly given the way both sides were playing, Sherrardswood responded by piling the pressure on our midfield and defensive lines, finding their way through a mere four minutes later to draw the scores level yet again.
A rash of substitutions saw Cotton, Nolan and Thorne re-join the action and the injection of (relatively) fresh legs gave Bunt the energy they needed as the game continued to go from end to end.
a happy Chairman
Finally Bunt’s attacking pressure paid off as Hollie Jardine was bundled over in the box, the referee having no hesitation in awarding the penalty.
Despite VERY clear instructions that Georgia was to dispatch the pen, the Chairman looked up from tying his laces to see Cotton standing over the ball and, before he had chance to throw a strop, the ball was in the back of the net!
The last five minutes was exhausting to watch, let alone play, as Sherradswood threw the proverbial kitchen sink at Bunt but a mix of sheer bloody mindedness, good decision making and possession in the corner(s) of the pitch meant that The Ladies racked up their second win of the season with The Chairman still unbeaten as manager!
Thanks to Bobby for running the line (and shouting at the back four) and thanks to Kate and Robyn for trusting the Chairman with their squad!
